Hispanic Scientists
Over the last century, Hispanic communities across the globe produced scientists whose work is truly noteworthy. They come from different Spanish-origin nationalities, socioeconomic classes, and educational backgrounds, and the specific scientific issues that they investigate differ. However, Hispanic scientists share a curiosity about problems that affect the world that can be dealt with by creative and exacting scientific study.
Despite the importance of their contributions, the brilliance of these Hispanic scientists rarely is mentioned in American classrooms. Although the products of their labors are utilized widely and greatly influence the quality of life on this planet, their names are not well known and their Hispanic heritage is often ignored. For example, ask yourself whether you are aware that asteroids were named after two Hispanic scientists in recognition of their accomplishments. Further, do you know that a Hispanic scientist assisted in the development of America’s first atomic bomb and was in observation planes measuring the impact of those weapons when they were dropped on Japan? It is the purpose of these pages to bring to light some of the most important Hispanic scientists responsible for these and other developments that affect humanity.
